Standard Cirrus
The standard Cirrus is without doubt the 'Chav Prince' of gliders. The premier choice of wanabee racing pilots it can usually be seen flying at 'faster than Mcready' speeds and pulling 3g as the pilot attempts to show they can dolphin fly. I once met one in a gaggle of 12 gliders climbing over a power-station, it joined in the middle and circled in the opposite direction to everyone else. Nuff said. If the Cirrus was a car it would have extra wide alloys, a stripe down the side and a spoiler added to the rear end, in fact it is probably the most 'modded' glider, with tips, brakes, turbulator tape and a hinged panel being amongst the favorites. Originally designed and built by Schempp-Hirth, the popular design has also been made (and adapted) by Grob and VTC. Over the years many slight changes were made, from changing the all flying tailplane to fixed and changing the wing profile and angle. The result is that there are a bewildering variety of what is supposedly a single glider type. Sifow credentials are reasonable, spoilt only by the 17m models that exist (and do nothing for the glider in any case). Find a good one and you will have a great glider, fly it well and you can take the scalp of many 'better' gliders. The boy racer of gliders so watch out in gaggles
